A
decision to enter the Ginetta G50 Championship after
the first 2 rounds at Brands Hatch put the team in a
catch up position. After taking delivery of the car
only a few weeks ago, it was a tall order to get the
car to a point where it was competitive. A good
testing session showed that the
team had produced a very competitive car putting up
the fastest time at the test. With rain
threatened, it was off to Thruxton for the teams'
debut G50 Cup meeting. On the
Saturday practice, Dan chalked up the fastest lap
times to give him pole position for all the 3 races
over the weekend with his ex team mate Carl Breeze
of TCR next to him on the grid.
The first race on Saturday got off to a bad
start, when a dragging clutch caused Dan to get
bogged down at the start giving Carl Breeze a first
corner lead. Dan slotted into second & despite
hounding Breeze for the whole race, settled for a
creditable second place on the podium.
The clutch problem was to set the scene for the
whole weekend & the start of the first race on
Sunday was a repeat of the Saturday race with Breeze
out dragging Dan to the first corner. Unfortunately
for Breeze, at the back of the circuit, a slightly
out of control Rob Austin (3) on the grass came
flying down the inside of Dan & took Breeze out of
the lead. Dan avoided the carnage & gratefully
accepted the lead which he held to the chequered
flag. Breeze rejoined in 12th & fought his way back
up to finish 3rd behind Frank Wrathall.
Sunday's
second race found Dan in 4th after another bad start
which got worse at Cobb when a Torvill & Dean moment
saw Dan & quite a few others spinning in a huge
cloud of dust & tyre smoke. When the dust cleared,
Dan found himself down in 12th place. A blistering
drive saw him carve his way though the field to 3rd
place trying to hold off Frank Wrathall in the
Dynojet car whose bonnet was flapping wildly.
On the last lap at the Club chicane, Wrathall dived
through on the inside to take the place only to have
Dan swop sides & fling himself back up the inside of
Wrathall to take back 3rd place on the finish line.
A good result for the weekend put us 7th in the
Championship & the whole team looking forward to Donnington.
